Es la especialidad que se ocupa de funciones y enfermedades, traumatismos, malformaciones y otros trastornos en niños y adultos; del oído, hueso temporal y base lateral del cráneo, nariz, senos paranasales, base de cráneo anterior y órbita, cavidad oral, labios, faringe, laringe, tráquea, esófago, cabeza, cuello, tiroides, glándulas salivales y lagrimales y estructuras adyacentes y piel. También incluye la investigación y el tratamiento de las afecciones que afectan el sistema auditivo, vestibular, olfativo y sentidos gustativos y trastornos de los nervios craneales; así como la comunicación humana con respecto al habla, lenguaje, voz y trastornos de la deglución. También incluye el estudio de trastornos genéticos relacionados.

Las enfermedades oncológicas de cabeza y cuello incluyen las patologías malignas que afectan a las vías aero-digestivas superiores (VADS: fosas nasales, senos paranasales, cavidad oral. faringe, laringe), la tiroides, las paratiroides, y los tejidos blandos del cuello. Según datos obtenidos de registros de tumores, englobados en Globocan (https://gco.iarc.fr), se estima que en España se diagnosticaron más de 12.000 pacientes con cáncer de VADS y más de 5.300 pacientes con cáncer de tiroides, lo cual hace de este grupo de tumores el sexto más frecuente en nuestro país.

Este grupo se articula en las siguientes líneas de investigación:

1. Desarrollo de la Línea de Investigación en Cáncer de Cabeza y Cuello y Cirugía de Cabeza y Cuello.
2. Desarrollo de la Línea de Investigación en pacientes afectados de patologías ORL con/sin cirugía.
3. Desarrollo de la Línea de Investigación en Inteligencia Artificial y ORL.
4. Desarrollo de la Línea de Investigación en influencia de la pandemia por COVID-19 en pacientes afectados por patologías ORL o intervenidos quirúrgicamente.
5. Creación de la Línea de investigación en Apnea Obstructiva del Sueño.
